Volvo aimed to reduce CO2 emissions

Volvo Cars unveiled at the Mondial del'Automobile in 2008, its voluntary and proactive program aimed at drastically reducing CO2 emissions of its products

The objective of this program is available in the coming years versions DRIVE emissions around 100g/km CO2, is measured in consumption combined cycle of 3.8 l/100 km.

From 2011, Volvo will launch a micro-hybrid system followed a year later by a hybrid diesel-electric.

"For us, the environment is naturally one of our top priorities. In parallel with the development of hybrid diesel-electric and to reduce CO2 emissions of all our engines. Within two or three years we have emitting cars less than 100g /km of CO2, "said the CEO of Volvo Cars, Stephen Odell.

The measures taken to gradually reduce consumption and vehicle emissions Volvo relate to both the optimization of power and that of all components of the cars themselves, for example, aerodynamics and many sources of rolling resistance.
"Together, these measures provide enormously. Within three years, we will achieve significant results, "continues Stephen Odell.

The first Volvo objective is to quickly drive down versions of the C30, S40 and V50 to 100 g / km CO2 (a combined cycle consumption of 3.8 l/100 km).

In 2011, Volvo hopes to offer its customers a Volvo S60 emitting less than 120 g/ km of CO2 (4.5 l/100 km), a Volvo S80 below 130 g / km (4.9 l/100 km). And a Volvo XC60 under 140 g / km (5.3 l/100 km), all these versions are powered by diesel engines.

The micro-hybrid, an innovative and attractive solution

The major changes planned for the coming years will be made many improvements and innovations which one is the micro-hybrid to be launched in early 2011.

A micro-hybrid car? The micro-hybridization at Volvo Cars is a "start-stop" which cuts the internal combustion engine when the vehicle is stopped. This solution offers many advantages over the equipment offered by other manufacturers.

It became adapts to both transmissions manual supporter automatic. In manual, it allows the driver of change of opinion and to restart the engine in a flash even if the car is still not completely at rest. In addition, no need to put the shifter in neutral.

"This micro-hybrid can save 4 to 5% of fuel combined cycle and more in urban traffic subject to numerous stops and restarts. In addition, our system has the advantage of being adaptable to most of our engines, "said Magnus Jonsson, Vice President and Director of Research & Development at Volvo Cars.

Technology GTDI on petrol engines

Volvo Cars is also working on gasoline engines in 2009 and submit a new generation of four-cylinder turbo directs injection GTDI (Gas Turbo Direct Injection).

"Thanks to technology GTDI, from five to four cylinders is possible without any loss of performance and a reduction of 20 to 30% of consumption and emissions of CO2," says Magnus Jonsson.

A diesel-electric hybrid with an electric motor on the rear axle:

The diesel-electric hybrid developed by Volvo Cars currently has the particularity of having a diesel engine at the front (a new version of the five-cylinder D5 causing the front wheels) and an electric motor located on the rear axle and causing the rear wheels.

The association between the two engines and the distribution of torque between the two axles made through an electronic order to maximize the efficiency of power transmission four-wheel drive and optimize the consumption of fuel depending on driving taxi.

The diesel engine is equipped with a "start-stop" cutting it when the car is stationary.

"The diesel-electric hybrid is a very interesting because it is based on connection between diesel, a kind of high-performance engine, and electronics. Unlike a gasoline-electric hybrid, our solution will provide great benefits to the environment both in town on roads and highways, "said Stephen Odell.

Since its inception in 2012, the hybrid diesel-electric expected to reduce further the already very low consumption of vehicles of the mark from 10 to 15%.

The next step: the hybrid rechargeable:

For Volvo, the next step - after 2012 - will be the hybrid rechargeable. The battery pack a hybrid car such charges during the night through a household electrical outlet all that is more banal. In all-electric, this car offers a range of a hundred kilometers. If necessary, the engine can be started to recharge the batteries while driving.
