The Mazda3 i stop presents world premiere

Mazda Motor Corporation will debut two new models of the all-new Mazda3 (known as Mazda Axela in Japan) product range at the 2009 Geneva International Motor Show from 3-15 March 2009. The world premiere of the Mazda3 with i-stop, Mazda’s advanced fuel-saving start-stop system, will be shared with the all-new Mazda3 MPS, Mazda3’s high performance flagship model.

The brand will unveil its world premiere as the Mazda3 with its advanced engine cut off at Mazda i stop, and the Mazda3 MPS, the high performance range. The Mazda3 MPS (Mazdaspeed Axela) displays a level of fuel consumption and pollutant emissions reduced, consistent with the emission standard Euro 5.

The Mazda3 is one of the jewels of our range: more than two million units in the first generation model have been produced. The new model features a design more assertive and dynamic. It is characterized by its agility and its impeccable road holding, giving the driver a sense of be one with his vehicle. He also stands by its exceptional performance in terms of environmental friendliness and safety, perfectly embodying the long-term environmental strategy called the Mazda "Zoom-Zoom Head" and to produce vehicles at once ecological, d a high level of safety and more fun to drive.

It has the i-stop in combination with the motor MZR 2.0 DISI (Direct Injection Spark Ignition). These two technologies specific to allow Mazda to this new model to display a fuel consumption reduced by approximately 12% (urban cycle) compared to the current Mazda3.

At the other end of the scale, the MPS "sport compact" version (pictured) uses a 2.3-litre turbocharged petrol unit, which Mazda claims features "improved fuel economy and emissions that satisfy Euro Stage 5".

The programme manager for the all-new Mazda3, Yoshiyuki Maeda, said: “The new Mazda3 series takes a significant step ahead in both the realms of driving performance and environmental technology to lead the way toward a new generation of motoring.”

Mazda’s i-stop is an intelligent proprietary engine stop-start system. The system precisely controls the positions of the pistons during engine shutdown, and then uses Mazda’s direct injection technology to perform a combustion restart. This returns the engine to idling speed in just 0.35 seconds (models with an automatic transmission); ensuring drivers experience a natural driving feel with no sense of delay. i-stop is the market-ready version of Mazda’s Smart Idle Stop System technology.

Horsepower is yet unpublished, but it should be equal to (or hopefully greater than) the current 263 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. The current generation of the Mazdaspeed3 is touted as one of the best front-wheel performers on the road today, so we expect big things out of this new model.

The Mazda3 MPS sport compact pushes Mazda design further and its exciting driving performance perfectly represents Mazda's Zoom-Zoom spirit. Carrying forward the MZR 2.3 DISI Turbo engine, Mazda3 MPS builds on the popularity and recognition of the previous model. It evolves the driving experience to an entirely new level of quality and pleasure with its emotional design and exhilarating performance.
