Seaweed farm to compensate CO2 emissions

A power plant fueled by coal from Taipower Co Taiwanese company will test the use of a seaweed farm to reduce its annual emissions of carbon dioxide. A basin with an area of 10 square meters has been established within the complex of the Central Ta-Lin, located in Kaohsiung in the south of the island.

This basin, composed of single-celled algae, could capture between 0.58 and 0.9 tons of carbon dioxide per year.

According to studies undertaken previously by the Taipower company, a plantation on one hectare of trees would capture approximately 25 tons of CO2 per annum, which is, in proportion, much less effective than a farm of algae.

If the tests are conclusive, this practice could be generalized in the years to come.
