Prevention of road accidents caused by drowsiness
At the spring conference of the Society for Scientific Labour (Gesellschaft für Arbeitswissenschaft) held in Munich, scientists at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz as well as their colleagues' University of Stuttgart have received the award for best scientific publication in 2007 published the journal "Zeitschrift für Arbeitswissenschaft."
This publication examines the origin of the drowsiness among bus drivers. It was conducted at the request of the German Federal Office for the Prevention and Occupational Health (BAuA).
Approximately one quarter of fatal accidents on motorways are attributed to drowsiness. It is from this observation began a joint study between scientists of Stuttgart and Mainz. To carry out their work, researchers together with bus drivers on their journey. The observations were conducted under realistic conditions, with the presence of passengers on long journeys, day and night.
Cameras pointed at the drivers have recorded their behavior and videos were made and analyzed in laboratories. Thanks to the results of its work, Prof. Dr. Axel Muttray of the Institute of Occupational Health, social and environmental at the University of Mainz and his team have managed to improve certain key points of their methods of analysis of videos. The objective of this project, in the long term, is to prevent accidents caused by drowsiness.
