Mercedes-Benz and Smart takes initiative for electric cars
Drawing an initiative under way in London, the automotive group Daimler AG and the energy group RWE AG announced Friday, September 5, 2008 the launch of a joint pilot project to promote electric cars in Berlin. As a first step, Daimler will put in place in the German capital more than 100 electric cars to its flagship brand Mercedes-Benz and Smart. The cars will be supplied with electricity via a network of 500 stations recharge installed by the German number two on Energy, RWE.
Berlin - German car maker Daimler and energy group RWE unveiled a pilot project to promote electric vehicles in Berlin that was inspired by one in London.
The German version was "the world's largest joint project for environmentally friendly electric cars," a joint statement said.
In the "e-mobility Berlin" plan's first phase, Daimler would provide 100 Mercedes and Smart cars to a wide range of users the company would probably select in the near future based on applications, a spokeswoman told AFP.
The project, dubbed "e-mobility Berlin", is supported by the German government which is to adopt in November a national development plan to promote electric vehicles. Jochen Homann, State Secretary, Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi), pointed out that electric vehicles were a "considerable economic potential" and that they "could quickly reduce the effects of climate Traffic.” The project will also gather valuable information on the acceptance of this new technology by consumers.
In response to discussions on CO2 emissions and their effects on climate, the efforts of various industry players have recently intensified. The German manufacturers of batteries work including the improvement of autonomy and the life of lithium-ion batteries. These development efforts will include technical adapt the technology for its practical application, for example by making the loading faster.
Electric vehicles open to medium and long term considerable potential to reduce the dependency on oil. The electrical energy has the advantage can be generated from primary energy sources, including from renewable sources. In addition, the high performance electric motor enabling effective energy.
According to the Federal Minister of Transport, Wolfgang Tiefensee, "e-mobility Berlin" will be an important part of the strategy of the Federal Government for the electro mobility. "Indeed, the end of 2008, the government intends to submit a development plan electro mobility; Containing a roadmap "for next milestones on a similar model for the national program dedicated to technology and hydrogen fuel cells (model PPP), launched in late 2006 by the Federal Government and in which more than one billion euros will be invested over 10 years.
