Joint venture lithium ion batteries for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs)

lithium ion batteries for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs)

Samsung SDI announced to establish joint venture (JV) with Bosch called SB LiMotive, which specializes in lithium-ion batteries used in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The two sides will invest $ 20 million each in this new structure should be ready next year. LG Chemical and Nesscap also expressed interest in developing a high-capacity battery for HEVs should equip themselves with the Hyundai Motor Company.

Samsung with Bosch

The director of Samsung SDI Mr. Park Yong-woo said "the two companies have each agreed to invest $ 500 million over the next 4 years when the joint venture will be created. This decision was taken following the increase high oil prices and the impact of pollution on the environment. The application of HEVs has also increased rapidly. " SB LiMotive could occupy 30% of the battery market by 2015. Until then, the company will prepare the production chain of lithium-ion battery to power hybrid electric vehicles. Bosch and Samsung will each own 50 percent of the new company and have equal representation in management.

Lithium-ion batteries are the basis for forward-looking technologies in the automobile, such as hybrid or electric drives. Bosch and Samsung expect a market volume of some three million hybrid vehicles by 2015. The prime objective of the joint venture is to optimize lithium-ion battery technology to meet the exacting requirements associated with the automobile – with respect to power density and safety, for example – and in this way to allow purely electrically powered driving over longer distances.

LG with Nesscap

The second battery of super-capacity developed by LG Chemical and Nesscap is the result of research among industry, academia and research institutes funded by the Ministry of Knowledge and Economy (Ministry of Knowledge Economy, MKE) since last five years. The ability of these new batteries could be 100 times greater than existing ones. The MKE hopes to market this type of module capacity by 2010.

The Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE) announced that LG Chem, Ltd. and NessCap Co., Ltd. completed the development of prototype of secondary battery and super capacitor, a kind of secondary battery, for last five years with inputting a budget of $39.3 billion.

If lithium secondary battery is used for a combined electricity and LNG car, a fuel -efficiency will be improved more than 35 percent compared to the existing engine automobile.

In comparison with conventional type capacitor (condenser), super capacitor is able to store electricity more than many hundreds times. International market of super capacitor is expected to rapidly grow as much as? 5.8 trillion in 2015, which is ten times bigger than current market.

The ministry official said, `It will contribute to improve fuel-efficiency through energy reduction in an age of high oil prices and to reduce significantly the emission of carbon dioxide, which is responsible for global warming.
